Frequently Asked Questions

What is Basin Pulse?

Basin Pulse connects people and decision makers in the Murray-Darling Basin.

We do this by providing a forum for communication online through Basin Community and through regular Pulse Reports that help to identify and understand the broader views of people in the Basin.

Why do we need Basin Pulse?

Important changes lie ahead for people living in the Murray-Darling Basin. Adapting to change is not easy for people, organisations or industries. We know that both people and decision makers are frustrated that they are not better connected during reform and change processes.

Good information and communication is essential for good decision-making at all levels. Basin Pulse recognises that any successful change is ultimately about the people. We provide independent insights on the views of people living in the basin in the belief that this will help change to occur that is good for the long term.

How does Basin Pulse inform decision making by government and business?

Basin Pulse provides objective evidence that can be incorporated into government and industry policy and service implementation. Importantly, it provides insights over time on attitudes to change and on the relative differences and similarities of issues and priorities between different regions and industries across the basin.

How was the Basin Pulse survey conducted

Basin Pulse surveys are conducted on the telephone by trained interviewers in the seven major regions of the Murray-Darling basin (Queensland basin, Far Western NSW, Northern NSW, NSW Riverina, Eastern Victoria, Western Victoria and the SA basin). Telephone numbers and the person within the household are selected at random. The data has been weighted to reflect the population distribution in each region. The latest survey is based on 500 interviews with people aged 18 years or older. The maximum margin of sampling error is plus or minus 4.4 percentage points. Copyright at all times remains with Inovact Consulting.

What kinds of information does Basin Pulse collect?

Basin Pulse collects information on the views of people living in the Murray-Darling Basin and the issues that are important to them.

Is Basin Pulse information reliable and robust?

Yes. Basin Pulse surveys are conducted by a professional and independent company, Taverner Research, that specialises in studies to gain objective insights on the perceptions and priorities of Australians.

What trends will Basin Pulse monitor?

The ones that matter most to people and decision makers. We know that water reform is important and so we have focussed on this issue initially in our first Pulse Report.

There are also big changes afoot in mining and communications. We also know that local issues matter to many people.

We will be keeping a close eye on these issues and identifying other things that really matter to people and decision makers. Let us know what matters to you by registering on the site or by contacting us.

What is the actual service that is provided?

The service for decision-makers in government and business is the supply of independent qualitative and quantitative research on the attitudes and priorities of people living and working in the basin.

In addition, the Basin Pulse web site is available to connect people and organisations. It also provides a forum where information, issues and ideas can be shared with all those holding an interest in the future of the basin’s environment, industries and communities.

How can I get involved?
